Google Gives Gemini a Big Maps Upgrade — Local Searches Now Show Photos, Ratings & Visual Cards

Google is rolling out a major update to the Gemini app that makes local results from Google Maps far more visual, informative and easier to understand. The new update is live starting today on both desktop and mobile, but only in English for now.

Local Results Get a Visual Makeover

Until now, when users asked Gemini questions that relied on Google Maps — like finding nearby restaurants, stores or landmarks — the chatbot would mostly respond with long blocks of text and a small map placed at the end of the conversation.

With today’s update, that changes completely.

Gemini can now “serve up local results in a rich, visual format,” Google says. Instead of plain text, users will now see:

  • A map front and center
  • Emoji-styled pins that help distinguish different kinds of places
  • Photo cards for each location
  • Star ratings and quick facts

The results look more like a mini Google Maps experience — but inside your Gemini chat.

New Cards Show Photos, Ratings & Helpful Review Insights

In the updated view, every place Gemini recommends comes with a card that includes:

  • A photo
  • Star rating
  • Key details pulled from Google Maps

Below the map and cards, the rest of Gemini’s written response continues as usual.

Tapping on any card opens extra information generated from Google Maps reviews, including:

  • “People talk most about”
  • Review summary
  • Tips from reviewers

These insights are powered by Gemini’s summaries of user reviews — similar to the new review summaries Google recently added directly to Google Maps place listings.

Designed to Make Local Discovery Easier

The change makes Gemini much more useful for local searches. Instead of scrolling through dense text to figure out which places are worth visiting, users can now quickly:

  • Compare photos
  • Scan ratings
  • Look at the map layout
  • Tap into quick summaries
  • Read reviewer tips

It turns Gemini into a more visual, intuitive way to explore what’s nearby.
