Microsoft Study Reveals How People Are Using Copilot Across Devices and Daily Routines

Microsoft has released new insights based on 37.5 million de-identified Copilot conversations recorded between January and September 2025, excluding data from commercial and education users. Rather than focusing solely on what people asked Copilot, the company analyzed when and how they interacted with it—painting a detailed picture of how AI assistants are becoming woven into everyday life.

Usage Patterns Shift by Device and Time of Day

The data shows clear behavioral patterns:

  • Mobile users often asked Copilot health-related questions throughout the day.
  • Desktop users were more focused on work and productivity, especially during office hours.
  • Programming and technical queries spiked on weekdays.
  • Gaming conversations rose sharply on weekends.
  • Philosophical or existential questions increased late at night.

Microsoft researchers summarized the trend:
“Users have tacitly agreed to weave AI into the fabric of their daily existence, turning to it for code reviews at 10 am and existential clarity at 2 am.”

The notion of people seeking “existential clarity” from a chatbot may seem unsettling, but it aligns with other reports showing increased reliance on AI—sometimes raising concerns about mental health implications. Similarly, while users frequently seek health advice from Copilot, the researchers noted that AI chatbots are not ideal substitutes for professional medical guidance, even if they feel like natural successors to “Dr. Google.”

Rise in Non-Technical Topics

Another major shift observed in the study was the expansion of non-technical conversation categories. In January, productivity-focused queries dominated the platform. By September, there was a noticeable increase in discussions related to society, culture, and history.

The researchers attribute this change to two factors:

  1. Existing users broadening their habits, and
  2. A growing mainstream audience joining the platform—users who are less developer-focused than early adopters.

Copilot Still Trails Market Leaders

Despite rising engagement, Microsoft Copilot remains far behind its competitors in market share. According to recent Statcounter data:

  • ChatGPT holds over 80% of the global AI chatbot market.
  • Copilot sits at just over 3%.

AI Assistants Are Becoming Everyday Companions

Even with its smaller user base, Microsoft’s findings suggest a broader societal shift: AI assistants are evolving from specialized research tools into everyday digital companions. Whether for work, health questions, creative tasks, or late-night self-reflection, people are increasingly relying on AI—often without even realizing it.
