Google Photos Gets New Video Editing Tools: Highlight Video Templates, Music, Text & More

Google Photos — the default gallery app on most Android smartphones — is rolling out a major update packed with new video editing features. The update introduces a redesigned video editor along with new tools that make creating shareable videos faster and easier for both Android and iOS users.

Google Photos Gets New Video Editing Tools

Redesigned Video Editor With Multi-Clip Timeline

Google announced that the updated video editor now includes:

  • A universal timeline that supports multi-clip editing for better storytelling
  • An adaptive canvas, making it easier to adjust edits across different screen sizes and orientations

This redesign aims to give users a more intuitive editing experience without needing professional video tools.

New Highlight Video Templates With Auto-Synced Music

One of the biggest additions is shareable highlight video templates. These pre-set templates come with:

  • Built-in music
  • Pre-added text
  • Auto-synced cuts to match the soundtrack
  • Clean, ready-to-share formats

To create one, users simply select a template, pick their photos and video clips, and Google Photos will automatically generate a polished highlight video.

How to create a highlight video:

  1. Open the Create tab
  2. Tap Highlight Video
  3. Choose media
  4. Let Google Photos auto-generate the video

Google says more templates will be added in the future.

Add Music & Custom Text to Videos

Google Photos now lets users:

  • Add soundtracks to highlight videos (available on Android & iOS)
  • Add custom text with different fonts, colors, and backgrounds (Android-only for now)

This removes the need for third-party editors like CapCut for simple highlight creations.

Rollout Timeline

Google confirms that all these features are gradually rolling out to Android and iOS users. Depending on the region and device, it may take some time to reach everyone.
