Instagram has begun rolling out a major update that gives users unprecedented control over what they see on the platform—thanks to artificial intelligence. The new feature, called “Your Algorithm,” allows users to view, manage, and customize the topics that influence their Reels recommendations, making the app more tailored to their personal tastes.

A New Way to Shape Your Instagram Experience
Meta announced that users will now see a new icon featuring two lines and a heart while watching Reels. Tapping this icon opens the Your Algorithm dashboard, where users can explore the interests and topics Instagram believes they care about.
From here, users can actively adjust what they want to see more—or less—of. Based on these inputs, Instagram says recommendations will adapt dynamically and become more relevant over time.
“Instagram is leading the way in giving you more control, so your Reels feel relevant and made for you,” the company said in a blog post. Meta also confirmed that the personalization tool will expand beyond Reels to other sections like Explore in the near future.
What You Can Do With Instagram’s ‘Your Algorithm’ Feature
Instagram says the new tool will offer several levels of customization:
View Your Top Interests
Users will see a summary of their strongest interest categories—the topics Instagram believes they engage with most.
Refine What You See
Users can type in topics to fine-tune their feed:
- Want more travel videos? Add it.
- Want fewer prank clips? Reduce it.
The algorithm adjusts based on these changes.
Share Your Algorithm
In a unique twist, Instagram will let users share their algorithm profile with others—giving friends a fun way to peek into each other’s tastes and content patterns.
Availability
The feature is currently live in the United States, with a global rollout for English-speaking users already underway.
AI Is Reshaping Social Media Algorithms
Instagram isn’t the only platform rethinking recommendation systems using generative AI.
Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has aggressively integrated Grok AI into its ranking systems. Grok now helps determine what users see in both the “For You” and “Following” feeds, and Musk has stated that X eventually plans to replace its entire algorithm with Grok.
As competition rises, the next phase of social media appears to revolve around user control, personalization, and AI-driven curation—with Instagram’s Your Algorithm feature marking a significant step in that direction.
